How to play jewel match-3 games

Three or more of the same gem in a line clears them. That’s the whole rule. Here’s the loop it builds into:

  1. Swap two gems that sit next to each other — one move, sideways or up-down.
  2. Line up three or more of one colour. They vanish.
  3. The gems above drop into the gaps and new ones fall in. Sometimes that lands another match on its own — a cascade, and you didn’t lift a finger.
  4. Match four, five, or an L or T shape and you don’t just clear gems — you make a power gem that wipes a whole line or a chunk of the board.

Simple to start. The depth shows up when you begin setting your next move while you make this one.

Tips to score higher and clear boards

Most beginners clear the first match they spot. Don’t — it’s usually the weakest move on the board.

  • Hunt for the swap that sets off a cascade, not the easy three-in-a-row. One cascade can out-clear three manual moves.
  • Build power gems on purpose: four in a row makes a line-clearer, an L or T shape makes a stronger one. Aim for those instead of stumbling into them.
  • Save power gems for crowded corners and locked tiles. Set two off next to each other and you clear a huge section at once.
  • On timed or limited-move boards, work the bottom first. Clearing low forces everything above to drop, and every drop is a free chance at another match.

FAQ

Are these jewel games free?

Yes — free to download and install.

Which devices and stores can I download them on?

PC (Windows), Mac, iPhone and iPad, Android, the Amazon Appstore, and the Microsoft Store. Use the store button for your device.

Do I need an internet connection to play?

No. You need a connection for the one-time download. After that the game runs offline — on a plane, on the train, anywhere.

How do I download and install a jewel game?

Tap the store button for your device, confirm the install in your app store, and open the game when it finishes. No account or setup needed to start playing.

What’s the difference between a jewel game and Bejeweled?

Not much. Bejeweled (2001) is the title that popularised the swap-to-match-three format, and “jewel game,” “gem game” and “match-3” all describe that same core mechanic. The games here are jewel match-3 puzzles in that tradition.
